Baby Tears

Hemianthus callitrichoides—commonly known as Baby Tears—is a popular foreground aquarium plant prized for its tiny, bright green leaves and dense, carpet-like growth. Its delicate appearance creates a lush, natural look that makes it ideal for aquascaping, particularly in smaller tanks or as a vibrant foreground layer.

Baby Tears grows by sending out runners that form a thick mat across the substrate, providing a soft, verdant carpet. Under proper conditions, it spreads quickly and can completely cover the tank floor, creating a striking contrast with taller background plants.

This plant thrives in moderate to high lighting and benefits from nutrient-rich substrates, CO₂ supplementation, and liquid fertilizers for optimal growth. Its small size and fast-spreading nature make it excellent for creating intricate aquascapes, but it requires consistent care to prevent thinning or melting.

Beyond its visual appeal, Baby Tears provides shelter and grazing surfaces for small fish, shrimp, and fry. Its vibrant green carpet not only enhances the aesthetic of freshwater aquariums but also contributes to a healthy, oxygen-rich environment.
